Narrative Description of Project:
This project entails feasibility study (social, financial and technical) for a community owned and managed 10 kW wind-diesel hybrid system including a solar generation component. The installation serves a village plus the schools and health post serving nine villages in the Zardaloo Valley. Activities to date have included
energy, agricultural and other natural resources assessment, installation of a 20 m meteorological data gathering tower to gather solar insolation, wind speed and direction data to identify the comparative advantages of wind and solar diesel hybrids to the community. Design of an energy generation, storage and distribution system was undertaken when technical and financial feasibility was established. Tariff setting, management and consumer training, technical training and support, power utilisation and demand side/supply side management models form an integral part of the project. The project aim is to establish a model for remote communities to sustainably operate their own power utilities, and to replicate the project in a programme involving community contribution, government and donor funding agencies.
